A Beaumont Health employee is suspected of disclosing sensitive patient information of nearly 1,200 people, the health system said in a statement Saturday.
The employee, who was fired, transferred information including names, addresses, dates of birth, contact information, social security numbers, reasons for treatment and insurance information to an individual working on behalf of a personal injury attorney between February 2017 and October 2019.
Beaumont notified 1,182 people of the breach beginning Friday. It said it launched an investigation as soon as it was made aware of the breach and in December discovered the extent of it.
The Michigan Attorney Grievance Commission alerted Beaumont officials of the breach, a health system spokesperson told the Free Press.
The now-former employee worked in the registration department of Beaumont and is not currently being named because he or she has not been charged with a crime.
Beaumont says it will work closely with law enforcement officials if they decide to prosecute the former employee.
